ON THE 2ND of June, Wonder Woman will be released in Irish cinemas. It has already generated a lot of discussion online after groups of men became angered at the fact that there would be several ‘women-only’ screenings of the movie across the world.

I mean come on. How often do we get superhero movies that aren’t about men? We really don’t need to be presented with anymore evidence that a great deal of misogyny exists within the community of gamers, comic enthusiasts and superhero fans that might be interested in the new DC title.

I don’t hear any women complaining about the fact that they’ll be able to go see a film about a character they can relate to, surrounded by women that they can relate to. Nope, just a bunch of angry men.

But what’s more important is that critics are absolutely loving the new movie, which a lot of people didn’t expect.

Mashable have hailed it as the most inspiring superhero movie in years. It’s currently rated as 96% on Rotten Tomatoes. Although all of the reviews aren’t in yet, it’s unlikely that it will drop much lower than that.

Gal Gadot’s performance in the role of Wonder Woman has been received excellently.

Moviepilot have said she is “a revelation; she fully owns the role as much as Robert Downey, Jr. owns Iron Man or Chris Evans owns Captain America. She is Wonder Woman.”

Comic Book Resources have hailed every aspect of Gadot’s performance – “Whether she’s cooing over a baby in a bustling cobblestone street, pondering the philosophy of sex aboard a cozy sea crossing, or blazing onto the battlefield armored and ready for war, Gal Gadot is glorious”.

Co-star Chris Pine (playing Trevor) is faring similarly well in reviews, being described as having fantastic chemistry with Gadot while guiding her through the world of mortals. A reviewer from Nerdist has pointed out that the location is the DC universe’s first ever glimpse of the sun and like most other critics, is welcoming it with open arms.

This may contribute to what made so many critics find Wonder Woman so inspiring. There’s never been such warmth, vibrance or lightness in the DC universe. All of that without sacrificing any of the strength or determination of the lead heroine.

It’s not without faults thought.

Critics have all seem to agreed that the climax of the film devolves into a blurry CG mess, like most big budget action-fantasy films do. While this causes it to lose some momentum, it’s not enough to negate the good – the good which most attribute to Gadot’s performance.
